Wine and Grilled food pairing
07/17/2024
We are now deep into Grilling weather. Although many people think that grilling and beer are a perfect pairing, wine is also a fantastic pairing with all things Grilled.

Pairing wine with grilled foods does not need to be complicated or fancy, and you can drink red and/or white on a hot summer day. For the reds, it is OKAY to chill them a little. Put the bottle in the refrigerator 15 min before you are ready to drink it and the wine should be at a perfect temperature for outside drinking. Actually, a chilled glass of wine can bring out the flavors in your foods in some very delicious ways.
Some basic "rules" and pairings of grilled food and wine are below:
  • Foods that have smokey flavors go well with Oaked wines: Cabernet, Malbec, Syrah, oaked Chardonnay, oaked Sauv Blanc
  • Foods that have spicy sauces go well with: Zinfandel, Fruity red Blends, Riesling, White Blends
  • Hamburgers Or Cheeseburgers: Cabernet, Zinfandel, Merlot, Red Blend, Malbec, Orange wines, California Pinot Grigio, or a creamier white
  • Hot Dogs and Brats: Tempranillo, Sangiovese, lighter Red blends, Rieslings, White Blends
  • Steaks pair with: Cabernet, Malbec, Red Blend, Syrah/Shriaz
  • Grilled Chicken pairs well with: Pinot Grigio/Gris, California Sauvignon Blanc, Rose, Zinfandel, Pinot Noir, Grenache
  • Shell Fish pairs well with wines that have citrus notes: Albarino, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, Rose, Sparkling wines, un-oaked Chardonnay, a light Pinot Noir, this months wine club selection: Muscadet Sevre-et-Main "Sur Lie"
  • Salmon or Trout or Snapper pair with white wines that have more body or lighter reds: Chardonnay, Viognier, Semillion, California Pinot Noir, Grenache, this months wine club selection: Coteaux du Giennois Rouge
  • Salty foods pair well with higher acid wines: Sparkling wines, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Riesling - this months wine club selection: Manchuela-Moravia Agria. NOTE: This wine is absolutely amazing with Parmesan cheese.
  • Grilled Veggies pair well with light bodied whites: Gruner Vetliner, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc
No matter what you are grilling, the staff at Vino Mas can recommend a wine pairing for you.
