Both Erich Berger and Erich Sattler farm using organic and sustainable practices and their efforts are clearly directed in one direction: the highest quality!
This month we are highlighting some fun different varietals: St Laurent, Zweigelt and Gruner Veltliner. These are easy drinking and all three have nice acidity which makes them very food friendly. The St Laurent is the heaviest of the wines and is the main wine for the month, it is the third most widely planted grape variety in Austria. Zweigelt is Austria’s most planted red wine grape and is a cross between Blaufränkisch and St. Laurent. This bottle should definitely have a slight chill on it before drinking and comes in a 1 Liter bottle. Gruner Veltliner is the "queen" of white grapes in Austria and accounts for a third of all vineyards in the country. I love Gruners; they are light, zesty and tend to have white pepper notes. Perfect for summer drinking! Gruner Veltliners are a terrific alternative for Sauv Blanc and Pinot Grigio lovers.
I made grilled spiced bone-in pork chops to pair with the St Laurent by Erich Sattler. This wine has a flavor profile that I would describe as between a Pinot Noir and a light Shiraz. It shows plenty of fruit flavors but has some spice notes to it with a nice acidity. The spices, fresh lemon zest and juice that make up the marinade recipe, accentuate the delicate sweetness that tends to characterize pork. I loved this wine with this dish. I served the pork with grilled asparagus and a side salad. It made for a very light meal on a warm summer night.

Jacque paired the Zweigelt this month with a Spaghetti al Pomodoro. This is the perfect recipe to highlight all the ripe and juicy summer tomatoes that are starting to ripen and the basil that is exploding in our gardens. NOTE: if you don't have fresh tomatoes or don't want to go through the process with fresh, you can use good-quality canned San Marzano tomatoes instead. Any type pasta will do for this dish, Jacque used Penne Pasta. This pasta dish is fresh, light and acidic, just like the wine....Delish!
NOTES: Medium to light in body with soft, aromatic notes of cherries and strawberries. A gentle wine that is great with a slight chill and dangerously easy to drink. Juicy and bright, Berger’s Zweigelt is loaded with crunchy red fruit, tart cherry, and cranberry. Excellent as is or served a touch cooler than cellar temperature. Practicing Organic. Comes in a In a liter size.
Gruner Veltliner:
NOTES: Light, delicate yellowish green. Aromas of bold exotic fruit, bananas, pear and a hint of lime. Dry, zingy, crisp and clean with pure, frisky green fruit flavors of lime, melon and pear with just a subtle white pepper note. Practicing Organic.

Erich Sattler St Laurent:
NOTES: Dark purple in color with a fine and fruity nose of cherry and berries. St Laurent is a wine that's light on its feet with fresh acidity. This wine drinks better with a slight chill on it. Flavors of blackberry bramble, mulberry, and blueberry notes, it has spice notes and plenty of down-to-earth mineral flavors. Certified Organic. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

AJ paired the Gruner Veltliner. "The minute I tasted the Gruner Veltliner from Berger, I knew I wanted to pair it with mangos. I love Gruner Veltliners, they have a unique structure to them and a fleshy fruit like mangos really brings out the more tropical notes of this beautiful wine. I am growing jalapenos in my garden this summer, and decided that a mango salsa on top of a grilled hearty white fish would be the perfect pairing. The fish market I go to had orange roughy fresh, so that is what I got. Any heavier white fish, like halibut, would be perfect. The combination of the and mango salsa was perfect, it really drew out the flavors of the wine and made for a great pairing. I just threw a quick side salad together with a mango vinaigrette, quick and easy! This wine is definitely a perfect summer sipper, enjoy!"
