 TYRELL'S
For over 160-plus years, Tyrrell’s has been a constant in both the Hunter Valley and Australian wine industries. The Tyrrell’s estate, nestled in the foothills of the Brokenback Range in the Hunter Valley, is a unique patchwork of vineyards. Thriving in a diverse range of soils, from sandy loams lying on ancient creek beds to heavier red clays over limestone, these vineyards produce some of the most distinctive and refined wines in the world.

All of the estate parcels are well established, with many sites bearing vines that are more than 100 years old and still producing fine wines that embody the characteristics and style of Tyrrell’s and the Hunter Valley.

With a fifth generation now involved in the business, Tyrrell’s will continue to remain family run, with each generation focused on passing the business to the next in better condition than they received it, all the while being guided by Edward Tyrrell’s motto: “Nothing is great unless it is good.”

Both Reds this month are Shiraz's. I thought this would be a fun month to compare the differences in the how the same varietal, from the same wine maker can be so different. Turning to New South Wales in Australia, the Hunter Valley region is a very important region in the history of Shiraz, with the grape first being cultivated there before spreading to other parts of the country. Shiraz is the same grape as Syrah as it’s known in France and much of the rest of the world, except Australia. Shiraz's tend to go very well with any type of meaty dishes or anything that is grilled or smoked.

The Hunter Valley the region's most famous wine style is its distinctive Semillon. The white this month, is a Semillon, the grapes are sourced from a small selection of some of Tyrell's top Semillon vineyards around the Hunter Valley. Most of the vineyards are dry grown and have an average vine age of 40 years. This wine shows citrus, honeysuckle, mineral notes with a nice acidity.

Higher Tier Wine Club Wine: Robert Biale R.W. Moore Zinfandel Quintessential Zinfandel in the heart of the Napa Valley.  For over 30 years, Robert Biale Vineyards has become a revered benchmark of heritage vineyard and Zinfandel.

High Tier Wine:
Robert Biale Vineyards R.W. Moore Zinfandel 2021

NOTES:  Rich notes of bramble fruit, candied strawberry, cocoa powder, and pomegranate molasses greet you in the glass. On the palate, the wine offers both fruit-driven and savory elements with notes of plum, black cherry, fig, baking spices, leather, and the vaguest of hints of the volcanic ash upon which it is grown. Elegant fine-grained tannins complete this stellar example of 100+ year old vine Zinfandel.
