Wine and Halloween Candy Pairing
10/26/2022
Trick or Treat....Give me something good to DRINK! Every store you walk into right now has Halloween candy everywhere. With Halloween just around the corner and candy and wine in most of our houses, any excuse to dig into that candy and bottle of wine for "educational" purposes, is welcome. Wine classes up everything, including candy. If so, what candy and what wines go well with each other. Surprisingly, Halloween candy can (and should!) be paired with wine. Below are some suggestions.

1. Candy Corn: I LOVE candy corn and eagerly await seeing it on the shelves in the fall. Some people think it tastes like sugary wax, I think it tastes like yummy goodness. Pairing it with a buttery Chardonnay will complement the candy nicely without being too overpowering. The Chardonnay will also soften the pure sugar flavors that candy corn can sometimes have.  Candy Corn and Chardonnay....PERFECT!

2. Skittles: Bags of the little individual Skittles are on every candy Shelf in the stores right now.  I don't seek out skittles, but when they are in my grand-kids halloween bag, I have to admit, I will eat a bag or two.  Skittles can be very sweet with awesome fruity flavors which is why it needs a dry wine that will cut through all of the sweetness. Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio is perfect because it will tone down the Skittles and complement the fruitiness.

3. Starburst candy:  As a kid, I ate a lot of Starburst.  It was my go to if I was craving a fruity sweet treat.  As they Say:  Life is always juicy when you’ve got a pack of Starburst.  Life is even better when you have a glass of Torrontes or if you like sweet wine, Moscato to go with the Starburst.  As you enjoy tropical fruit flavor with every bite and sip, you just might forget it’s fall and not summer.

4. Hershey’s Mild Chocolate Bars:
Who can resist milk chocolate?  Hershey’s is a sweet milk chocolate that pairs very well with the jammy qualities of Zinfandel.  Each sip of wine and bite of chocolate, has you tasting chocolate covered berries....Delish!

5. Reese's Peanut Butter Cup:  I am a Peanut butter fanatic.  Putting peanut butter and chocolate together.....Genius!  A fruit forward Cabernet Sauvignon is a great match. The fruit flavors complement the nuttiness of the peanut butter, while notes of cocoa pair well with the chocolate.  NOTE: A bolder tannic Cabernet will not pair well, Chocolate has tannins just like the red wine does, it is important to match the tannin content of the wine and chocolate.

6. Snickers candy bars:  As a kid, Snickers was my candy bar of choice.  It has it all:  Chocolate, caramel, nougat and nuts.  A glass of Syrah goes amazingly alongside the salty, chocolaty treat!  Syrah is full dark fruit flavors and vanilla, all finished by sweet silky tannins.

Whether you’re looking for wine to serve at a Halloween party or to drink on Halloween night as your doorbell rings, Vino Mas has lots of different wines to get you set for your candy and wine pairings.
