January Vino Mas Wine Club
01/04/2023
This month we are highlighting wines from Bagueri in Slovania. The Reds and the white are wines that are perfect for winter. Both the Merlot and the Cabernet are full bodied and have soft tannins and lots of fruit. The Sauvignon Blanc is a beautiful golden color, full bodied and is very complex. Note that the vintages for all three of these wines are older, these are current vintages for the winery.

This month I paired all three wines with soups. With the cold weather, soup for me, invokes comfort. I love the way the house smells as the soup is simmering and sipping on a great glass of wine until its ready to be ladled into my bowl, makes me totally content.

I paired with Black Bean Winter Chili with the Merlot. This Soup/Chili has a bit of spice to it but the corn and Butternut squash give it a subtle sweetness. The fruit forward Merlot complemented the dish. This recipe is Vegan if you sub Vegan cheese.

I love anything seafood! This rift on New England Clam Chowder went perfectly with the Sauvignon Blanc. Because this wine is much creamier than most Sauv Blancs with a medium body, it was delightful with this winter white.

For the Cabernet, I made a Italian Wedding Soup with Mushrooms, I used frozen mini-meatballs which made the soup quick and easy to make. The mushrooms gave the soup a umami richness that paired well with the wine.

Bagueri Merlot

NOTES: Appearance: Dark velvety ruby red. An outstanding aroma of blackcurrant, plum marmalade, cocoa, chocolate and mint. Soft mouthfeel with delightful notes of ripe berries and plum, followed by the characteristic dark chocolate aftertaste. A solid structure with an agreeable freshness. A pleasantly long and warm finish.

Bagueri Sauvignon Blanc

NOTES: Appearance: Yellow with mineral reflections. Aromas are a detour from the typical fresh sauvignons – varietal but particular and multi-faceted. Reminiscent of elderflower, Muscat and dry grass and nicely complemented with melon and ripe pear. The Flavor shows Honeydew melon and pear, it is smooth and silky, medium-bodied with a delicate freshness.
